Manchester United are closing in to complete the signing of Inter Milan’s goalkeeper Andre Onana, reported The Athletic on Sunday.

Onana, 27, is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Red Devils which will keep him at the club till 2028.

He is also expected to join Man United’s pre-season camp in New York on Wednesday should he complete his medical on time.

The biggest uphold in Onana’s transfer was the player’s price as United made their first offer that was up to €45m (£38.6m) but the Italian wanted nothing less than €60m.

However, a compromise is expected to be reached very soon as the English club have recently proposed €43m plus €5m in add-ons, although the exact figure is yet to be known.

Onana has been wanted for so long by his former boss Erik Ten Hag under whom he played at Ajax.

However, after David De Gea’s departure, United’s pursuit of the Cameroon footballer was accelerated as they did not want to start pre-season without a first-team goalkeeper.

Onana appeared in 41 matches for Inter Milan last season and conceded 36 goals, keeping 19 clean sheets in progress.

It has to be mentioned that Onana is one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in the world.

In the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final against Manchester City last month, which City won by 1-0, the Cameroonian goalkeeper completed 32 passes with 72% accuracy, completing 10/21 long balls as well, which is considered very good for a keeper.

Man United have already signed Mason Mount from Chelsea on a €60m deal while the departures of Zidane Iqbal, Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and De Gea were also confirmed.

The midfielder has also gotten #7 which was previously worn by legendary Man United players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and George Best.

Mount joined Chelsea as a six-year-old and was promoted to the first team at the age of 18, since then, the midfielder featured in 195 matches wearing the Blue colours, netting 33 goals and assisting 37.

He also left his mark in the history books of the Blues after assisting Kai Havertz, who scored the only goal in the 2021 UEFA Champions League (UCL) final against Manchester City at the Estadio do Dragao, Porto.
